The battle sequences with just a few soldiers working the woods, to loads of knights on a battlefield, is the most impressive part of the game and even though the quests aren’t as satisfying

So far I have only seen good swords and polearms. Cataphract's Mace is decent, imho. It's also long enough to be of some use from horseback. It is decent, I agree, but it is a weapon class 3. I feel like there is no better tiers for blunt weapons than that, unfortunately. Cataphract's Mace is decent, imho.
Depends on terrain, the composition of your melees, and whether or not you use them defensively, or offensively to break enemy line. Use defensive formations on hilly terrain, aim to break away and move to higher ground/woods using offensive formations if you're out in the flat and/or open vs archers or mounted.
